Day 13,734(1) - Review of Never Finished.mp3
Transcript
00:00:04 Kevin
Hey gang, Kevin here, Life 22, and it has been a hot minute since I got a chance to finish all my podcasts on the daily, handle all of the things that I have to handle in a day, and make our way through actually stopping and listening to Audible.
00:00:23 Kevin
So what's happened in the past is
00:00:26 Kevin
During COVID, I listened to like 30, some odd books, 33 books in the first year.
00:00:31 Kevin
And then I want to say I dropped to 20 because I started listening to it, like peppered in my podcast back in and added some new ones and yada yada.
00:00:39 Kevin
Now I probably finish like 5 books a year.
00:00:41 Kevin
I really should get cranking on it.
00:00:43 Kevin
But every time I do a book, since like, I can't remember when, year two of listening to books on Audible, so like 2021,
00:00:56 Kevin
Since 2021 and 2022, I've been like reviewing, as most of I review the books that I listen to.
00:01:03 Kevin
And it's not an in-depth review, it's just kind of my take on it, as most of you know.
00:01:09 Kevin
And I do audibles because I'm on the go all the time.
00:01:12 Kevin
So I'm listening to podcasts, I'm listening to books.
00:01:15 Kevin
And so I started two books, and then I had to take notes on one.
00:01:19 Kevin
So I was like, oh, put a pin in that.
00:01:22 Kevin
And
00:01:23 Kevin
And so I'll be releasing that.
00:01:24 Kevin
I'm going to go take notes probably at some point here soon so I can continue listening to that.
00:01:30 Kevin
But this one, as most, if you watch the channel, you know I did a shout out to Mr.
00:01:37 Kevin
David Goggins.
00:01:39 Kevin
And with Dave, we were trying to
00:01:45 Kevin
get him on the show.
00:01:46 Kevin
And we had, like a lot of things that I do, I've got so many things going on that I'm like, oh, I got to do this.
00:01:52 Kevin
And then I don't have enough attention to the thing that I'm trying to do.
00:01:56 Kevin
So I wanted to do a campaign where we were like, just like calling out David Goggins.
00:02:01 Kevin
And now he's on social media again.
00:02:03 Kevin
He was like, we went in and it was like he was hibernating.
00:02:06 Kevin
And so now he's out.
00:02:07 Kevin
And I just finished his book yesterday, his second book.
00:02:11 Kevin
So this is the
00:02:12 Kevin
never finished versus his first book, which is Can't Hurt Me.
00:02:17 Kevin
Now, I'm going to go through kind of like a chapter by chapter because I have the chapter list in front of me and kind of give you a brief synopsis of, you know, what the book goes into.
00:02:25 Kevin
But my overall take was it was a good book.
00:02:29 Kevin
It was definitely a sequel to the first.
00:02:32 Kevin
And so the first book, if you didn't know who David Goggins was, which a lot of people don't, and then
00:02:39 Kevin
They're becoming more and more people and they kind of just know who he is because of his races, because he was a SEAL, because he's been on, all these different places.
00:02:49 Kevin
And he goes into like his backstory, his life story, and, early what created him foundationally as, a human being and where he pulls his strength from and little tactics and tips that he uses
00:03:05 Kevin
And so the second book is kind of a continuation of that, which is more finite stories in where he, later on in life, how he made it through Moab, the Moab, a race, and, how he, persevered and pushed people to keep doing it and how he just kind of goes with like a nope ******* approach, you know, like I'm doing it.
00:03:33 Kevin
We're going with it.
00:03:34 Kevin
We're going.
00:03:35 Kevin
And he does that in and out, which you've got to admire his strength, right?
00:03:41 Kevin
And he talks about, some other stories like he was, how he just had surgery and he wasn't supposed to be, running or jumping out of an airplane.
00:03:50 Kevin
And he's training, he's training, paramedics.
00:03:54 Kevin
And so it's a whole bunch of different things like that.
00:03:59 Kevin
In the second book,
00:04:03 Kevin
I would say it was just more of the first.
00:04:04 Kevin
It was more of the first, but with less of the details, with more details that you didn't know from the first.
00:04:09 Kevin
He interviews his mom.
00:04:10 Kevin
That was a big one in the book.
00:04:13 Kevin
He's, there's just a bunch of, a bunch of things that, you know, he does in the book.
00:04:22 Kevin
And,
00:04:29 Kevin
Yeah, there's just a, there's a whole pile of things that he does in this book that he didn't tell you in the first one, which obviously, because he can't, right?
00:04:35 Kevin
He doesn't have to, but I feel like we already know who he is from the first book.
00:04:39 Kevin
So if you like David Goggins, you're gonna like this book.
00:04:44 Kevin
The sequel's never as great as the first, you know, so obviously, you know, the rabbit's out of the hat, right?
00:04:50 Kevin
This is David Goggins, this is where he pulls his strength from.
00:04:52 Kevin
And you just kind of get like, the second one really like is just,
00:04:56 Kevin
It just tells you more stories of like how he works, how he decision makes.
00:05:03 Kevin
And I'm a big believer in decision making, right?
00:05:06 Kevin
So like every decision you make, every choice you make in life, and if you have a plan and a methodology behind you and how you make your choices, and if you make good choices.
00:05:16 Kevin
So if you just look at the world and like, if I just make a good choice, if I make the best choice available at the time, even if it's the most outlandish and sometimes thinking outside the box is great,
00:05:26 Kevin
You should always end up on top.
00:05:28 Kevin
Like that's the, you may never end up on top, but you should.
00:05:33 Kevin
And that's where people go through this ebb and flow.
00:05:35 Kevin
They kind of, they go up and then they have a catastrophic something happens, right?
00:05:39 Kevin
Because even your good choices can't prevent life from happening.
00:05:43 Kevin
And so, you know, you'll experience failures and things like that and you pick yourself back up and you grow from it.
00:05:48 Kevin
Because that's also a choice, right?
00:05:50 Kevin
Like, oh, I failed.
00:05:51 Kevin
Well, I better choose to pick myself back up instead of sit here and wallow.
00:05:58 Kevin
So, that's, I mean, that's kind of the, that's the book in a nutshell.
00:06:05 Kevin
It's just, it's more of David.
00:06:08 Kevin
And so if you're looking to see how he functions, to see how he does what he does, maybe pull some inspiration from it, pull some ideas from it, I would say start with this first book, move to the second book.
00:06:20 Kevin
If you do them back-to-back, you may seem that the second book's a little repetitive.
00:06:24 Kevin
But I mean, obviously you're getting to know a person.
00:06:25 Kevin
So you're going to get that.
00:06:28 Kevin
And then if you're going to draw strength of it, start applying it while you're doing the book.
00:06:33 Kevin
The first book actually has a roadmap to that.
00:06:36 Kevin
Like throughout the entire book, he does a hashtag like get hard.
00:06:41 Kevin
You know what I mean?
00:06:41 Kevin
Or hashtag can't hurt me.
00:06:43 Kevin
And throughout the entire thing, this one, I think it had at the beginning.
00:06:48 Kevin
It wasn't as prevalent beating it into your skull as the first one was, like where you were like, get on social media and tell me, can't hurt me.
00:06:56 Kevin
And so like I did the entire first book and he actually responded to a couple of them.
00:07:03 Kevin
And I thought that was interesting.
00:07:04 Kevin
That's why I thought, man, it'd be great to get David Goggins on the show.
00:07:11 Kevin
So let's see.
00:07:14 Kevin
And now for our.
00:07:18 Kevin
So obviously opening credit, Joe Rogan gives him a blurb at the beginning.
00:07:22 Kevin
His mom, Jacqueline Gardner, gives him a blurb.
00:07:26 Kevin
Dwayne the Rock Johnson gives him a blurb.
00:07:28 Kevin
This is the dedication, warning order, introduction.
00:07:33 Kevin
And then we go into chapter 1 all the way through chapter 8.
00:07:38 Kevin
Nope, chapter 9.
00:07:42 Kevin
Okay.
00:07:44 Kevin
So with a lot of these, so you got your introduction.
00:07:46 Kevin
Okay, chapter one was maximizing minimum potential.
00:07:51 Kevin
So just the little things.
00:07:59 Kevin
Yeah, anyways, maximizing minimum potential.
00:08:04 Kevin
So it's really just like taking the little strengths that you have and working on them and picking them back up.
00:08:12 Kevin
And in each one of these chapters, he goes in like, okay, so he's got like a, he usually has like a podcast to start the chat, like a pre-podcast to start the chapter.
00:08:21 Kevin
And I don't, and some of them he didn't.
00:08:23 Kevin
Okay.
00:08:24 Kevin
Yeah.
00:08:24 Kevin
So he kind of like discusses like his take and then there's then the meat and potatoes of the actual book.
00:08:32 Kevin
book is evolution number one.
00:08:34 Kevin
Now, I don't believe you get these podcasts if you're not listening to the audible book.
00:08:39 Kevin
So if you get the physical book, you're going to get the imagery.
00:08:42 Kevin
And the narrator who is in the podcast with David Goggins while they're discussing each podcast, then the narrator reads the evolution.
00:08:52 Kevin
And
00:08:53 Kevin
and then they go and they do a summary.
00:08:55 Kevin
So like podcast one, evolution one, and then they do podcast two, which is the conclusion and the kind of like recapping of chapter one.
00:09:04 Kevin
Then they go into chapter two.
00:09:07 Kevin
You get these added audibles where you get to hear David Goggins discussing some of this stuff.
00:09:13 Kevin
I don't, I didn't, like I said, I didn't read the physical book, but
00:09:18 Kevin
The narrator also describes towards the end, like, man, the imagery of some of the photos of like your swollen knee and all these other things are just phenomenal.
00:09:27 Kevin
And it just like, it really kind of puts you in the zone, like, wow, now I can actually see what you're describing.
00:09:33 Kevin
You don't really get that.
00:09:34 Kevin
I'm sure Audible has like an appendice, appendices that goes along with this.
00:09:40 Kevin
But anyways, that's always why I like it too, because you get to hear, a lot of times you get to hear the author, which is really cool.
00:09:50 Kevin
You get to hear the author.
00:09:52 Kevin
You get to, there's just a lot of different cool things like that.
00:09:57 Kevin
I believe it was what.
00:10:04 Kevin
Sometimes they don't read the book.
00:10:05 Kevin
Like David doesn't read his book.
00:10:07 Kevin
I've listened to Artie Lang's books before.
00:10:09 Kevin
Like he reads part of it and then like he goes into rehab and his
00:10:13 Kevin
Like his buddies.
00:10:14 Kevin
He's like, yeah.
00:10:15 Kevin
He's like, Artie's a heroin junkie.
00:10:17 Kevin
So I had to fill in today because it's costing him a lot of money to do this.
00:10:20 Kevin
And this guy's broke and needs to sell this book.
00:10:22 Kevin
So I'm doing him a solid.
00:10:24 Kevin
And it's like, that's kind of funny.
00:10:26 Kevin
Not funny because he's in rehab, but it's kind of funny that like he has buddies that are willing to stand up for him.
00:10:31 Kevin
And that's Artie.
00:10:31 Kevin
Like he's a **** show, right?
00:10:33 Kevin
Like that's the, that's the, like it's par for the course, right?
00:10:37 Kevin
So I'm trying to think who played Princess Leia.
00:10:42 Kevin
Karen, Karen Fisher, Carrie Fisher.
00:10:47 Kevin
She read her, the one book I read of hers.
00:10:49 Kevin
I think she had a couple of them.
00:10:50 Kevin
One of them said like in my library because it was free.
00:10:53 Kevin
And then it was like, I listened to it, like I was listening to it because it popped up and then like she died like that week.
00:10:59 Kevin
And I'm like, listen, so like I'm finishing the book like after she's dead, listening to her talk about it.
00:11:04 Kevin
Like it's just, I think Matthew Perry, he read his book.
00:11:06 Kevin
That was good.
00:11:07 Kevin
You know, and this isn't about other people's books.
00:11:09 Kevin
This is just like,
00:11:11 Kevin
I guess this is just a general podcast and just on some of this stuff anyways.
00:11:15 Kevin
But so he does this and that's the nice part about why I like the audible is because he will listen to podcast one, podcast two.
00:11:22 Kevin
You know, he'll list, he'll be discussing with the narrator why he did this, why he chose that.
00:11:27 Kevin
You get a little bit more in-depth.
00:11:29 Kevin
They may have the podcast in the book.
00:11:32 Kevin
Like I said, no knowledge there.
00:11:35 Kevin
Chapter 2, Merry ******* Christmas.
00:11:38 Kevin
podcast 3, evolution 2, podcast 4, right?
00:11:41 Kevin
So they get your in and outs.
00:11:43 Kevin
And he just, he's describing like, just like the woe is me moments.
00:11:48 Kevin
And then you get the, how he picked himself up.
00:11:54 Kevin
The mental lab, you know, podcast in, evolution, podcast out.
00:11:58 Kevin
A savage reborn.
00:12:03 Kevin
That was chapter 4, 5 disciplines, discipline of discipline.
00:12:08 Kevin
Like, yeah, you need to, you need to keep, you need to keep, you like you need to hone in discipline just as a metric.
00:12:16 Kevin
You need to discipline your discipline, right?
00:12:17 Kevin
So that's, he talks, you know, it's just, it's like little tips of advice that like, you know, he's picked up from the military, he's picked up from friends, he's picked up from experience.
00:12:27 Kevin
These are just the little things like, and it's hard for, I can't give all this to you in a book.
00:12:31 Kevin
or in a book review.
00:12:32 Kevin
I can give it to you by saying, this is like, here's a roadmap.
00:12:36 Kevin
Here's my recommendation.
00:12:38 Kevin
If this book is for you, because maybe you're a slather *** maybe you don't have discipline, maybe you need some discipline, and maybe you need to look at a shining example of discipline and getting hard and staying, just being the monster, right?
00:12:52 Kevin
He has a dragon in him.
00:12:53 Kevin
He's tamed it.
00:12:54 Kevin
He's tamed it.
00:12:55 Kevin
And it's been a phenomenal thing for all of us to watch, to spectate.
00:13:00 Kevin
He's a
00:13:02 Kevin
he's a specimen of human perseverance.
00:13:07 Kevin
Chapter 6, the art of getting hit in the mouth.
00:13:11 Kevin
So every time he turns around, he's getting slugged with something and then he just shakes it off, right?
00:13:16 Kevin
That's the reckoning.
00:13:21 Kevin
And then the last one is playing until the whistle with all the podcasts in and out.
00:13:26 Kevin
Oh, what, chapter 9.
00:13:32 Kevin
wringing out the soul.
00:13:34 Kevin
And he does his acknowledgments and his end credits.
00:13:37 Kevin
Something he does discuss in the book, I believe it's either discipline of discipline or the art of getting hit in the mouth, right around there.
00:13:45 Kevin
It's somewhere around the, like, you know, the 60% mark in the book.
00:13:52 Kevin
He describes like the people that you choose to be in your foxhole with.
00:13:58 Kevin
So like his pacers, when he goes racing and running, he does, when he goes running, he has to, he wants to pick people.
00:14:12 Kevin
Like some of them don't even have experience running, but that's okay because they have qualities in them that he knows he needs in somebody.
00:14:24 Kevin
And that's, that's something to look for.
00:14:27 Kevin
Like don't put people in your foxhole that like are, don't want the best for you, that aren't willing to do what it takes, are not willing to make the tough calls that are, you know, or don't have an attribute that you're looking for, you know, that it's far outweighed, right?
00:14:42 Kevin
Like their negative attribute far outweighs their positives and like they're just going to drag you down.
00:14:47 Kevin
or they're not going to be there in the clinch.
00:14:49 Kevin
Like depending on the situation, what people you put around you at that time.
00:14:55 Kevin
And knowing the people around you and the people that you associate with and the people that you can just like think of and be like, this person, that job, this person, this one, this one, this one, you know.
00:15:06 Kevin
I think the discussion to bring back with his, of like his childhood with his mom, and there were some revelations that she even bestowed upon him that she had like not told him.
00:15:16 Kevin
And so, we got to hear it like one-on-one, and you get to hear his mom have the discussion with him, which was pretty, which is pretty awesome.
00:15:27 Kevin
Yeah, it's about it's about growth, man.
00:15:33 Kevin
It's about human, you know, just getting your characteristics in order, getting your get what you need to get done, and you know, like taking examples and letting them become you, right?
00:15:45 Kevin
Like,
00:15:45 Kevin
Everyone needs a little David Goggins, right?
00:15:48 Kevin
Like, everyone needs that.
00:15:48 Kevin
Like, there's always like, if you don't even have any David Goggins in you, like, you're not getting out of bed.
00:15:53 Kevin
You're gonna be fat and lazy.
00:15:54 Kevin
You're gonna do like, so that's, yeah, that's, what I got for the book.
00:16:07 Kevin
That's what I got for the book, guys.
00:16:08 Kevin
So that was never finished by David Goggins.
00:16:11 Kevin
David, I hope we can get you on the show.
00:16:14 Kevin
You can bring Goggins with you.
00:16:17 Kevin
That would be phenomenal.
00:16:19 Kevin
That would be much appreciated because, you know, we want to meet the man, the myth, the legend, and the body that it inhabits, which is David Goggins, right?
00:16:29 Kevin
So there is the, if you listen to the book, they talk about there's Goggins and then there's David Goggins, or there's David.
00:16:35 Kevin
David and Goggins, they're two different, like,
00:16:38 Kevin
He kind of like personifies his last name as this, the monster, right?
00:16:43 Kevin
The dragon that he has tamed.
00:16:46 Kevin
Like the Hulk, right?
00:16:48 Kevin
All of a sudden just got, you know, knocks David out and Goggins steps in and it's time to persevere.
00:16:53 Kevin
So, but all right guys, we'll catch you next time on Life 22.
