Hey gang, Kevin here.
00:00:07 Kevin
And we're doing one of them late night podcasts.
00:00:10 Kevin
But it's been a long time coming because I actually realized that I hadn't.
00:00:14 Kevin
I had done an interview back in May that was released in June, or it was in June, and I released it in July.
00:00:21 Kevin
And it was with Mr.
00:00:25 Kevin
Rick Walker, who ran for governor against Dan Crenshaw.
00:00:31 Kevin
I believe it was 2016.
00:00:38 Kevin
Anyways, I interviewed Rick, a phenomenal guy.
00:00:44 Kevin
I like his book.
00:00:45 Kevin
It was very good.
00:00:46 Kevin
I read his book.
00:00:47 Kevin
I got an early release of it.
00:00:48 Kevin
We discussed it in our interview podcast, which was released back a while ago, and you can check that out on the channel.
00:00:59 Kevin
I knew I needed to review it and I hadn't actually done a formal review because I did the interview and life happens.
00:01:06 Kevin
And so I ended up just also buying it on Audible because it's just the easier way for me to listen to it.
00:01:11 Kevin
So I ended up listening to the book for the second time and I had just recently finished it.
00:01:15 Kevin
And before it got too far out of my memory, I needed to do, I finished it like, oh geez, I think I finished it on my drive out to Connecticut for Thanksgiving.
00:01:24 Kevin
So, you know, so we're like a week.
00:01:28 Kevin
But I still have notes and screenshots of things that I had read when we did the actual book review.
00:01:36 Kevin
Like when I was actually like listening to it.
00:01:38 Kevin
And so I had to take, it was one of those things.
00:01:41 Kevin
You just take the PDF that they send you and you listen to it in their like audio reader.
00:01:48 Kevin
It's like you can read the digital form.
00:01:50 Kevin
I had a hard copy.
00:01:52 Kevin
I still have a hard copy.
00:01:53 Kevin
I believe it's up on my mantle with.
00:01:56 Kevin
all my other hard copies.
00:02:00 Kevin
But it was one of those things I just hadn't gotten around to actually reviewing the book.
00:02:03 Kevin
So that's what we're doing today, guys.
00:02:05 Kevin
So his book is Nine Steps to Build a Life of Meaning.
00:02:09 Kevin
I've got it pulled up on Audible just so I can give like some chapters and stuff like that.
00:02:14 Kevin
There's an accompanying PDF, so if you get it on Audible, highly recommend.
00:02:19 Kevin
Doing the Audible version, it's just so much easier with people on the go, people in my generation, you know what I mean?
00:02:23 Kevin
Like you're just boom, boom, boom, especially if you're a go-getter.
00:02:26 Kevin
If you're just like at home and you just, you know what I mean?
00:02:28 Kevin
Like you don't have as much going on as somebody like heaven, then, you know, listen to the book in, you know, in your own head as you read it.
00:02:39 Kevin
So, but it's 9 steps to build a life of meaning.
00:02:45 Kevin
And
00:02:46 Kevin
If you have the audio book, it is a six hour and 51 minute listen on normal speed.
00:02:52 Kevin
It is it's made-up of a bunch of chapters where he kind of describes where he where he came from, you know, just like how he came to be.
00:03:04 Kevin
And that's as the introduction goes.
00:03:06 Kevin
As the book starts, there are
00:03:12 Kevin
I believe, if I remember correctly, he starts the foreword with him being in a group of people that he sat on a board with.
00:03:20 Kevin
And some people that were amongst his circle had been kidnapped by terrorists.
00:03:28 Kevin
And they sent the video to them with, I think it was a cutoff ear or a thumb or something like that.
00:03:36 Kevin
And then the video was him being beheaded.
00:03:38 Kevin
And it was like, whoa.
00:03:39 Kevin
and he's like, there's really terrible people in this world.
00:03:42 Kevin
And you need to figure out where you stand in this world.
00:03:46 Kevin
And that is a lot of what the book is about.
00:03:48 Kevin
It is self-help, self-betterment, choice-making, decision-making.
00:03:53 Kevin
He lays out nine steps.
00:03:56 Kevin
I do like his approach.
00:03:59 Kevin
I'm not going to say that the nine steps are for me or for you, but at least listening to them, taking them in.
00:04:06 Kevin
And you can
00:04:08 Kevin
you can make those choices.
00:04:09 Kevin
And a lot of times, a lot of choices in life, the better choices are the harder choices.
00:04:15 Kevin
And it's not always the path.
00:04:16 Kevin
The path, what was it?
00:04:18 Kevin
The path of least resistance is not always the path worth taking because the life we're not worth fighting for is not life, life's not worth living.
00:04:25 Kevin
I mean, we're going down a whole Rd.
00:04:26 Kevin
of cliches here.
00:04:29 Kevin
So he gets me, I think it was,
00:04:36 Kevin
She said, I believe it was in the first chapter.
00:04:41 Kevin
The GQ parties.
00:04:43 Kevin
Okay.
00:04:44 Kevin
So he introduces himself.
00:04:46 Kevin
He introduces arbitrage in the introduction and how he then he also introduces his book structure.
00:04:57 Kevin
But he talks about arbitrage and
00:05:00 Kevin
how like him and his father would buy like old watches and gussy them up and then sell them to somebody who would pay more for the watch.
00:05:09 Kevin
And that was his, that is the arbitrage, right?
00:05:12 Kevin
To find that hidden value that other people didn't see, right?
00:05:15 Kevin
Like, so one man's treasure is another man, or one man's trash is another man's treasure.
00:05:20 Kevin
Something along those lines is the best way I can describe it.
00:05:26 Kevin
Late night podcast with late night coffee.
00:05:32 Kevin
So step one, choose a worthy enemy, right?
00:05:37 Kevin
So he goes through and if you don't have an enemy, you just, what are you facing?
00:05:46 Kevin
You need something to give you resistance in the world and everyone needs an enemy.
00:05:50 Kevin
And inevitably you find an enemy, right?
00:05:52 Kevin
Like if you just,
00:05:53 Kevin
If you listen to politics all day, eventually it's like, oh, it's the left, oh, it's the right, oh, it's that Trump guy, oh, it's this, it's that.
00:05:58 Kevin
And your body automatically makes an enemy.
00:06:00 Kevin
So since it's naturally ingrained in you, it's better to pick an enemy and choose one that's worthy.
00:06:06 Kevin
Like do not like just pick easy ones because it's easy, right?
00:06:08 Kevin
Like you don't want to be that jerk, that bully, because then you become your own enemy, right?
00:06:13 Kevin
Like you're just the guy that just picks on everybody, picks on all the easy battles, picks on all the, like, you know,
00:06:19 Kevin
It's like, I want to win a fight.
00:06:21 Kevin
How do I win a fight?
00:06:22 Kevin
Oh, I'm going to pick one with a nine-year-old, like, because I beat up a nine-year-old.
00:06:25 Kevin
Like, well, yeah, well, what's the point of the fight then?
00:06:28 Kevin
Why did you pick that as an enemy?
00:06:30 Kevin
Because you're just being lazy.
00:06:31 Kevin
And, you know, you got to pick a worthy enemy.
00:06:35 Kevin
And then he kind of like gets to, you know, GQ parties and, let's see here, life's balance.
00:06:45 Kevin
He teaches lessons, the theory.
00:06:49 Kevin
how love conquers hate.
00:06:50 Kevin
He has a lot of quotes and like things in biblical passages he follows.
00:06:59 Kevin
So he uses like recent examples of people that he likes, like Dan Crenshaw, right?
00:07:06 Kevin
He respects Dan Crenshaw.
00:07:07 Kevin
He respects Dr.
00:07:08 Kevin
Ben Carson.
00:07:10 Kevin
So he references them quite a bit in the book.
00:07:12 Kevin
Dan does his foreword.
00:07:14 Kevin
So it wasn't his foreword.
00:07:15 Kevin
Yeah.
00:07:15 Kevin
So Dan does the foreword for the book.
00:07:21 Kevin
The, I'm trying to think what, he references George Washington.
00:07:33 Kevin
See, I should have done this like last week.
00:07:36 Kevin
And Alexander the Great.
00:07:39 Kevin
He brings them up quite a bit.
00:07:41 Kevin
He brings up a lot of like the art in the front of the book.
00:07:47 Kevin
which now everyone's going to yell at me because I don't remember the art in the front of the book.
00:07:51 Kevin
It was, they even described it in the book.
00:07:57 Kevin
Perfect.
00:07:57 Kevin
This is turning out to be, but I also do a lot of stuff unscripted.
00:08:01 Kevin
So, you know, that's Kevin for you.
00:08:06 Kevin
That's also what the extra text describes.
00:08:09 Kevin
It talks about all the different things like the artwork that he does.
00:08:13 Kevin
You know, he's a lot of a lot of Greek references.
00:08:17 Kevin
just him, it's not Zeus, it's Archimedes or somebody striking down like the Hydra.
00:08:26 Kevin
Oh, it's Hercules.
00:08:32 Kevin
He's got me.
00:08:32 Kevin
I can't retain everything all the time, but.
00:08:37 Kevin
He does a lot of these deep references and he just really goes down a deep path on a lot of these different topics.
00:08:45 Kevin
And he spent a lot of time doing it.
00:08:47 Kevin
Now, are you going to follow him down those paths?
00:08:53 Kevin
Maybe.
00:08:54 Kevin
Did he go down that path so you don't have to?
00:08:56 Kevin
Maybe.
00:08:57 Kevin
And that's, you know, it definitely is worth a listen.
00:09:01 Kevin
It gives you some perspective.
00:09:03 Kevin
He kind of talks about, you know,
00:09:06 Kevin
He brings it back to that value that you should be finding in your life.
00:09:11 Kevin
And he also brings up a lot of mistakes he had, like, in his, I think I can rule the world and he runs against, he runs, he runs in a congressional race and, he bets everything on it.
00:09:27 Kevin
And then there's, like, again, he loses.
00:09:31 Kevin
And now he's made to be like a laughingstock.
00:09:33 Kevin
And how does he face his wife and kids who he's had to be kind of like on the road away from for like 11 months?
00:09:39 Kevin
And it's like, you know, this path that almost led him to a divorce and his reawakening into, you know, the man that he is and the man that he should be.
00:09:48 Kevin
And I mean, this book almost conveys his life stories.
00:09:53 Kevin
Like, would he do things differently?
00:09:55 Kevin
Probably not.
00:09:56 Kevin
because it made him the man that he is.
00:09:58 Kevin
But hopefully his story can help you become that man now without having to make the same mistakes, right?
00:10:03 Kevin
But we all are on a journey and we all have to make our own mistakes.
00:10:07 Kevin
So maybe you see his mistakes and you don't make the same ones, but at the same time you are going to make some mistakes and then you are going to have those and those will be part of your autobiography.
00:10:18 Kevin
But that said, so step one is picking a worthy enemy.
00:10:23 Kevin
And step 2 is to aim high.
00:10:25 Kevin
Aiming low is the only sin.
00:10:28 Kevin
So, because if you're just like, we just talked about, go beat up a nine-year-old, you have to pick a worthy enemy.
00:10:42 Kevin
So he's kind of compounding on his first step, but also giving you a little guidance into the next, right?
00:10:47 Kevin
So he gives additional, he talks about Alexander the Great quite a bit in this portion of the book.
00:10:56 Kevin
The theory on who are you becoming, the wisest minds, and then your next moves.
00:11:06 Kevin
Step 3 is pick a master or one will be thrust upon you.
00:11:10 Kevin
So you have to serve something, right?
00:11:12 Kevin
Isn't that the old adage?
00:11:17 Kevin
And so that's kind of what he's getting at.
00:11:19 Kevin
You have to have a master.
00:11:22 Kevin
You have to serve something.
00:11:23 Kevin
You need a purpose, right?
00:11:24 Kevin
So what is your purpose?
00:11:26 Kevin
What is it you are serving?
00:11:28 Kevin
Or are you just doom scrolling?
00:11:31 Kevin
And now you are just a slave.
00:11:33 Kevin
to the doom scroll to the algorithm, right?
00:11:36 Kevin
Like boom, he talks about that too.
00:11:38 Kevin
He talks about getting his life in order, eating healthier.
00:11:41 Kevin
He had some health scares.
00:11:43 Kevin
He does runs.
00:11:44 Kevin
He focuses.
00:11:45 Kevin
He needs to get up early.
00:11:47 Kevin
The greatest of the greats get up early.
00:11:49 Kevin
What does he do?
00:11:51 Kevin
He makes those tough decisions.
00:11:52 Kevin
He doesn't want to have to like easily hit the snooze button on his alarm.
00:11:56 Kevin
So he like puts it on blast like 2 closets away.
00:12:02 Kevin
Now, if I tried that,
00:12:03 Kevin
I would get up.
00:12:04 Kevin
And that's my issue now.
00:12:06 Kevin
Like I set an alarm for 4.30.
00:12:07 Kevin
I try to do my best to get to 4.30.
00:12:09 Kevin
Some days I do it.
00:12:10 Kevin
Some days it's like 630.
00:12:12 Kevin
And that's the absolute latest that I'll get up.
00:12:15 Kevin
But my goal is 4.30 and I have the same problem.
00:12:18 Kevin
And I reach over and I'm like, you know what?
00:12:19 Kevin
My wife will get ****** and then I'll wait for her to beat me out of bed.
00:12:23 Kevin
Like not like race me out of bed, but like, damn it, stop waking me up.
00:12:27 Kevin
*** **** you.
00:12:29 Kevin
That's how I do it.
00:12:30 Kevin
And I know
00:12:33 Kevin
I shouldn't.
00:12:34 Kevin
And I know that it doesn't happen, that it's exaggerated, but in the back of my head, that is my thought process.
00:12:40 Kevin
Like, I'll stay in bed as long as she is not getting angry with me for not getting up.
00:12:48 Kevin
And that's kind of like, that's my scapegoat.
00:12:49 Kevin
And that's a problem that I have.
00:12:52 Kevin
He buries his phone in another room.
00:12:53 Kevin
And so he has to actually like shut the damn thing off.
00:12:56 Kevin
I know that just the distance between my bed and wherever the hell I have to put my phone so it shuts the hell up.
00:13:02 Kevin
will wake my wife up and I'll be in way more trouble.
00:13:05 Kevin
And I just couldn't pull it off.
00:13:07 Kevin
I would have to like live in a new house, away from my family, which is a responsible adult male.
00:13:13 Kevin
That is my responsibility to not live in another house.
00:13:17 Kevin
So, but those are the different things he talks about in addition to, so like you have a master that'll be, or one will be thrust upon you.
00:13:27 Kevin
Is your master, you know,
00:13:30 Kevin
It doesn't have to be a physical, it's not a person, right?
00:13:32 Kevin
It is a manifestation of something, some greater purpose that you are serving.
00:13:38 Kevin
To some people, it is God, right?
00:13:40 Kevin
To some people, it must only be God, right?
00:13:44 Kevin
And some people, it is like, well, it is being the greatest father I can be.
00:13:50 Kevin
It is to fatherhood that I am, that is my one and only master.
00:13:55 Kevin
And then by a byproduct of that, you are an amazing husband and you are this and you are that.
00:14:01 Kevin
And there's a subset of like that master's will, right?
00:14:04 Kevin
And that's kind of what he's getting into to break it down into a simpler term.
00:14:08 Kevin
Because I mean, that's what happens.
00:14:10 Kevin
Like if you don't have a focus, if you don't have a goal,
00:14:13 Kevin
It's just whatever.
00:14:15 Kevin
Like, why would you, like everyone, when you say, and Jordan Peterson brings this up too, like if you ever have phenomenal amounts of freedom, you have these great, you're like, oh, I have the freedom to do whatever I want.
00:14:26 Kevin
And then it's like, okay, well, if you could do whatever you want, what would you do?
00:14:29 Kevin
And people are like, they have no idea.
00:14:32 Kevin
They don't know.
00:14:32 Kevin
They don't want all these choices.
00:14:34 Kevin
They need some sort of structure, right?
00:14:38 Kevin
The same thing with freedom.
00:14:39 Kevin
Like people are just like, oh, I'm free.
00:14:42 Kevin
I'm free to do whatever I want.
00:14:43 Kevin
It's like, we still have a duty though.
00:14:47 Kevin
You have a duty to those freedoms.
00:14:48 Kevin
You don't like you, don't just get freedom.
00:14:51 Kevin
You have a duty to defend it.
00:14:52 Kevin
You have a duty to stand up for it.
00:14:54 Kevin
You have a duty to, you know, family, God and country.
00:14:59 Kevin
Like that's, you don't just get these freedoms.
00:15:01 Kevin
You can do whatever you want.
00:15:02 Kevin
You can forsake it all, like, because then your freedom is worth nothing.
00:15:06 Kevin
And that is,
00:15:08 Kevin
another rabbit hole we're going down, but that's, I mean, it is very similar to the topic at hand.
00:15:14 Kevin
Step 4, trust, revelation requires sacrifice.
00:15:21 Kevin
So, the fast, my seven-day sacrifice, the exam, I was stabbed in the neck, the art of the miracle, a rap moment.
00:15:35 Kevin
So he gets an Agamemnon
00:15:38 Kevin
the past must be sacrificed.
00:15:41 Kevin
Your past must be sacrificed.
00:15:44 Kevin
Tainted sacrifices, our rash vows, a bigger problem, my mental fog.
00:15:50 Kevin
There's something's got to give.
00:15:51 Kevin
Sacrificing 90% of my net worth.
00:15:58 Kevin
And he does talk about that quite a bit, is donating
00:16:04 Kevin
to charity.
00:16:05 Kevin
You can't just give falsely, right?
00:16:07 Kevin
Like you just, there's that Christian philosophy that like, you give a man like $10 who is needy for nothing in return.
00:16:19 Kevin
And then, God will reward you like tenfold.
00:16:24 Kevin
The problem is if you're giving that 10 bucks, no expecting to get it tenfold, then you will never get tenfold.
00:16:30 Kevin
You won't even come close.
00:16:32 Kevin
You may even be another negative 10.
00:16:34 Kevin
Because it's the fact that you're giving it, not expecting it.
00:16:38 Kevin
That is the true purpose of the giving.
00:16:45 Kevin
And so a lot of people miss that point.
00:16:47 Kevin
They're just like, oh, if that's how it works, you just keep giving and giving and giving and eventually you'll get paid forward.
00:16:52 Kevin
Sure, and if you can think that way, but to be like also expecting it, like you should do it,
00:17:00 Kevin
knowing that someday it may come back to you, but may being a critique, a pivotal point there in our teeter-totter.
00:17:10 Kevin
But yeah, let's see here.
00:17:14 Kevin
Step 5, no joy, no joy requires pain.
00:17:20 Kevin
Like so have knowledge that joy requires pain.
00:17:35 Kevin
Okay.
00:17:38 Kevin
And then he introduces art, which is in the follow-up and or pictures in the book, if you get the hard copy.
00:17:47 Kevin
Yeah, so if you want to get joy, like if you ever listen to anybody talk about marriage, right?
00:17:52 Kevin
Everyone's like, oh, marriage is terrible, marriage is terrible.
00:17:54 Kevin
Like, no, because you don't understand marriage.
00:17:56 Kevin
And then people are like, the people that you talk to that are actually happy, they're like, no, marriage is the best thing ever.
00:18:02 Kevin
Marriage is the best thing ever.
00:18:03 Kevin
And it's just like kids, raising kids.
00:18:05 Kevin
You get people, oh, kids are terrible.
00:18:06 Kevin
Like, no, kids are not terrible.
00:18:08 Kevin
Kids are the best thing ever, too.
00:18:10 Kevin
And so you have these two things that are very great in life, and they all require sacrifice and hardship.
00:18:19 Kevin
Marriage isn't easy.
00:18:20 Kevin
It is something you have to work at every single day.
00:18:22 Kevin
Every single day, you need to work at your marriage.
00:18:27 Kevin
And if you don't work at it and you ignore it, falls apart.
00:18:30 Kevin
It is like a house.
00:18:32 Kevin
It is a house.
00:18:33 Kevin
It is both.
00:18:36 Kevin
It is both the physical manifestation.
00:18:39 Kevin
The house is a physical manifestation of your home, which is brought together.
00:18:44 Kevin
It is the physical thing that you live in, right, that you make home, that you nest in.
00:18:49 Kevin
But as part of that, you are building that.
00:18:52 Kevin
with somebody else that is making that nest so that you can raise your robins in it, so that you can raise them to be good adults in the future.
00:19:03 Kevin
But you have to work at that, and you have to work at raising those little robins, and you have to work at this, and you have to work at that, and you have to work at it, you have to work at it.
00:19:10 Kevin
And that is painful.
00:19:12 Kevin
That is painful.
00:19:15 Kevin
It's a struggle, man.
00:19:16 Kevin
It's a struggle every single day, day in and day out, day in and day out, day in and day out.
00:19:21 Kevin
And
00:19:22 Kevin
You can't just look at that and say, I've, no, there's got to be an easier way.
00:19:28 Kevin
There isn't.
00:19:30 Kevin
There isn't.
00:19:31 Kevin
That is a toil that you pick, and in return, you get some of the greatest joy of being a significant other, to being a spouse, to being a husband, to being a wife, to being a father, to being a mother.
00:19:46 Kevin
All those things come from that toil day in and day out.
00:19:49 Kevin
The sacrifice, the
00:19:52 Kevin
I sacrifice time away from my kids so that I can provide them good education, happy Christmases, a roof over their head, heat on cold days, money to repair the roof when it's not around.
00:20:06 Kevin
I wish I could
00:20:08 Kevin
give back that sacrifice and just have a sack of money, but it doesn't work that way.
00:20:11 Kevin
You have to sacrifice that.
00:20:13 Kevin
So it is about having a giant pie that you have to divvy your day up into and then still fighting amongst that to allocate time to spend with family, to spend with kids, to spend with your significant other.
00:20:26 Kevin
And it is work and it is painful.
00:20:29 Kevin
And with joy comes pain.
00:20:32 Kevin
And that is what he's getting at with this portion of the step.
00:20:36 Kevin
Down to the last four guys.
00:20:39 Kevin
Embrace the unknown.
00:20:46 Kevin
Trends don't matter.
00:20:47 Kevin
How to build a life that matters.
00:20:52 Kevin
Tchaikovsky and the Swans.
00:20:53 Kevin
He's talking about Swan Lake.
00:20:56 Kevin
Love requires vulnerability.
00:20:59 Kevin
So with that, like you, with everything in life, there is risk, right?
00:21:07 Kevin
You want to start a business.
00:21:08 Kevin
It's risk.
00:21:09 Kevin
You don't know what's going to happen.
00:21:10 Kevin
Well, should I spend my money or should I save it?
00:21:13 Kevin
Well, if I spend it, then I won't have it tomorrow to pay a bill that might come up.
00:21:18 Kevin
But your fear of not spending that money, scared money don't make money.
00:21:23 Kevin
It's a great philosopher once said.
00:21:26 Kevin
And if you're not, if you're not,
00:21:30 Kevin
If you're not, if you're too afraid to take that risk, that could also be your demise.
00:21:35 Kevin
You have to embrace that unknown, that risk, in order to move forward and find greatness, right?
00:21:41 Kevin
Like, imagine, imagine like the just the great adventures of the world.
00:21:46 Kevin
Magellan, you know, Christopher Columbus, all these people that came to other places, you know, like a lot of people that went alongside of them, along with them, had their own separate journeys.
00:22:00 Kevin
didn't make it.
00:22:02 Kevin
They died.
00:22:03 Kevin
They got killed in the quest for adventure, in the quest for conquering the unknown, for finding the unknown, to explore the unknown.
00:22:15 Kevin
And you have to embrace it because otherwise, then what's the point?
00:22:19 Kevin
What's the point?
00:22:19 Kevin
You got to go forward.
00:22:21 Kevin
You can't just sit there and be afraid to go forward because you're afraid of going forward.
00:22:24 Kevin
It's not.
00:22:25 Kevin
Yeah.
00:22:26 Kevin
So embrace the unknown.
00:22:27 Kevin
Step 6.
00:22:28 Kevin
Step 7,
00:22:29 Kevin
give away what you want to keep.
00:22:36 Kevin
The problem, relevance and power, Washington and Carson, slamming the tyranny, command unveils character, the law of C.S.
00:22:49 Kevin
Lewis, the next move, defriction, safety or meaning, never both.
00:23:00 Kevin
So, we've all heard the cliche, if you love something, let it set it free.
00:23:06 Kevin
If it comes back to you, hang on and hold it and love it forever.
00:23:11 Kevin
Essentially, that's what he's saying.
00:23:12 Kevin
Like, don't, and I think I briefly touched on this earlier when I said, like, you'd give away, give away your wealth, give away that, because it will be given back to you.
00:23:24 Kevin
Do not expect it to be given back to you.
00:23:26 Kevin
It may never be given back to you,
00:23:30 Kevin
But you have to strip yourself of these material wants and things like that are holding you back and out of your way.
00:23:39 Kevin
You may want to keep it, you may be impulsified to keep certain things, but just know that is just holding you back from being the person you're supposed to be.
00:23:50 Kevin
Act like you will live forever.
00:23:55 Kevin
The problem, what is a step
00:23:57 Kevin
Historical Einstein's theory, imagining space-time, analogy of the thun, defeated by the story, the greatest duty of any man.
00:24:09 Kevin
I think that was the part that I enjoyed.
00:24:14 Kevin
A real girl's more than a fake father, next moves.
00:24:28 Kevin
So he talks about some real deep topics here in this.
00:24:33 Kevin
And I believe this is the one where he talks about his daughter.
00:24:40 Kevin
Act like you will live forever.
00:24:44 Kevin
So right, like don't just sit there and be fearful about moving forward and dying and things like that.
00:24:49 Kevin
But he also describes being a father in this one.
00:24:54 Kevin
Bent knees, remake bent hearts.
00:25:05 Kevin
So I screenshotted a bunch of quotes that I really enjoyed from this.
00:25:23 Kevin
Okay.
00:25:26 Kevin
This is at the beginning of the book, though.
00:25:27 Kevin
So this is 1 where he describes, so I've got an excerpt here.
00:25:41 Kevin
Only a weak man cannot hate.
00:25:44 Kevin
He, therefore, can never really love.
00:25:48 Kevin
Sometimes our enemies are easy to identify, like that father defending his daughter.
00:25:54 Kevin
But more often, enemies hide beneath the surface like a tumor.
00:25:58 Kevin
The deepest foes are often a piece of us.
00:26:03 Kevin
Like my fear of rejection in college to ask that freshman girl out or our fears to make us miss out on life and love.
00:26:12 Kevin
So now, okay, so that's page 28.
00:26:15 Kevin
Okay, so he describes
00:26:19 Kevin
A father.
00:26:31 Kevin
This love is motivated.
00:26:38 Kevin
Okay.
00:26:40 Kevin
There was a great example he gave in this book.
00:26:44 Kevin
And now I'm drawing a blanket where it was.
00:26:51 Kevin
He, there's a man that murdered somebody to protect his daughter.
00:26:59 Kevin
He was found guilty.
00:27:01 Kevin
And he goes, if I was that father, I'd have done the same thing.
00:27:04 Kevin
And if you are a father out there, you should be accepting of that, right?
00:27:10 Kevin
Like, how can you, as a father, not do, and I'm sure a lot of us have heard these stories, right?
00:27:16 Kevin
Like, there's a guy running for county sheriff in Virginia.
00:27:20 Kevin
I believe it's Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, something like that.
00:27:25 Kevin
He was all over the news a couple months ago, and he
00:27:29 Kevin
followed this guy who had molested his daughter, and he went and got his daughter back, and then he murdered the guy.
00:27:39 Kevin
And because in the law did nothing.
00:27:42 Kevin
And sometimes you have to remember that, you know, what's more important to you, right?
00:27:49 Kevin
Like your daughter or making sure that you don't violate some man given law, right?
00:27:54 Kevin
Like, and that's
00:27:57 Kevin
And he justifies that in here, and I don't blame him for justifying that, and I can't disagree with him that if somebody were doing something terrible to one of my children, that I wouldn't do the same thing that this father he describes in the book does.
00:28:11 Kevin
And I mean, he doesn't describe it in great detail.
00:28:13 Kevin
I don't believe I can't remember.
00:28:15 Kevin
I knew that.
00:28:17 Kevin
See, that's why I took a lot of these different portions from the book.
00:28:28 Kevin
Yeah.
00:28:32 Kevin
Anyways, there's a...
00:28:43 Kevin
He took this portion from the book and he did a...
00:28:46 Kevin
I'm sorry.
00:28:52 Kevin
Yeah, anyways, it was a great...
00:28:59 Kevin
It was just, it was just something that like you just, you hear about and nobody ever really speaks about.
00:29:03 Kevin
They don't say, hey, I should, I would do the same thing.
00:29:06 Kevin
It's always like, oh, that's tragic, that's terrible that father did that.
00:29:10 Kevin
Like, no, it's terrible that we let child molesters on the loose.
00:29:14 Kevin
We let, it's terrible that we let all these things happen.
00:29:17 Kevin
And that there's not enough true men out there that were willing to go defend their children and go enact justice, right?
00:29:25 Kevin
And
00:29:27 Kevin
There sometimes is a fine line, and we've described it maybe on the channel, but sometimes you have to do certain things.
00:29:38 Kevin
There are, what is it, the Cain and Abel story, right?
00:29:40 Kevin
Like you, like if all the descendants of 1 were going to exact justice, then you get blood libels.
00:29:48 Kevin
And to prevent that, the justice system comes in order.
00:29:51 Kevin
And that is like, you know, God has marked Abel for killing Cain.
00:29:56 Kevin
or Cain for killing Abel.
00:29:57 Kevin
And so he's a marked man.
00:29:59 Kevin
So you shall not touch him because he's already being punished, right?
00:30:03 Kevin
So that kind of takes the part out where he is, you get a feud, right?
00:30:13 Kevin
You get that blood libel that goes for generations, right?
00:30:17 Kevin
That kind of puts an end to it because like, listen, as a third party is stepping in to handle this.
00:30:22 Kevin
And sometimes you get to that borderline where it's like, that thing is our system of laws and justice.
00:30:29 Kevin
And when it fails, the only thing that remains is still to do that which is right, which is to seek justice.
00:30:36 Kevin
And so he kind of opens the door a little bit to that in this book.
00:30:42 Kevin
So, Act Clink You'll Live Forever.
00:30:51 Kevin
And then step 9, seek beauty and you may find truth.
00:30:57 Kevin
And then he talks about all, I was blind, now I see, sometimes I wander.
00:31:04 Kevin
Sometimes wandering is prayer.
00:31:07 Kevin
What is maximal love?
00:31:11 Kevin
A magical living canvas.
00:31:14 Kevin
He talks about Rembrandt, love and virtue, financial evolution, what are your next moves?
00:31:21 Kevin
And he describes his family.
00:31:29 Kevin
Epilogue.
00:31:33 Kevin
He does an epilogue.
00:31:36 Kevin
Alexander in Samaria.
00:31:38 Kevin
He does exclusive bonuses, acknowledgments, and then his end credits.
00:31:43 Kevin
But yeah, there was just a lot of just different quotes throughout the book.
00:31:47 Kevin
What looks beautiful, really beautiful, is also right, which is Vincent Van Gogh, a quote from him.
00:31:55 Kevin
However, just as a single color painted is not beautiful, a perfect risk-free life can never be powerful.
00:32:02 Kevin
I believe that's a quote from him.
00:32:04 Kevin
And I just took, there was just tons of it when I was listening to it the first time, just took screenshots on my phone just so I had it.
00:32:13 Kevin
Why am I threatened by powerless people that I will never meet?
00:32:19 Kevin
But no, there's always greater to make your enemies willing
00:32:24 Kevin
Willingly fight you for, willingly fight for you than to destroy them in the Machiavellian and Machiavellian and Sun Tzu sense.
00:32:38 Kevin
Just victory arises through loss.
00:32:44 Kevin
Just tons of great lines in this.
00:32:48 Kevin
He spent a lot of time on this, years, I believe, writing this book.
00:32:53 Kevin
and reflection and just time.
00:32:55 Kevin
And books are a lot of work.
00:32:57 Kevin
But getting to actually meet Rick was just a good, was an all-around good experience, just an insight into the mind that wrote the book after you read it, you know, and then going through and then like actually getting to ask him questions and stuff like that.
00:33:13 Kevin
So I highly recommend listening to the book, coming back, listening to this podcast and be like, Kevin,
00:33:18 Kevin
You're not even doing it justice.
00:33:20 Kevin
And then going and listening to the interview where it was still fresh in my mind and I still just did it.
00:33:25 Kevin
I got through it or almost through it to do the interview with Rick and have questions for him and having all that fresh in my mind.
00:33:33 Kevin
So highly recommended.
00:33:35 Kevin
Go out there, get a copy of the book.
00:33:38 Kevin
It's at Rick.
00:33:38 Kevin
You can find it at rickwalker.com.
00:33:40 Kevin
You can find it on Amazon.
00:33:41 Kevin
You can find it on Audible.
00:33:43 Kevin
And pretty much anywhere books are sold, I believe.
00:33:45 Kevin
So with that, guys, we'll catch you tomorrow on Life 22.
